Ten Things to do in Thornbury for a Girls' Weekend
Thornbury (just shy of 2500 people) is a charming little town with some great restaurants. It’s like the sophisticated older sister of Blue Mountain Village. You can wine, dine, shop and hike, without having to deal with crowds.
Here are ten things to do in and around Thornbury with your girlfriends.
1. Breakfast at the Thornbury Bakery Cafe
Grab some lattes, a cinnamon roll (sized to share) and a seat at the by the window and fuel up for your day. The Bakery has been a landmark in town for over 80 years and was recently renovated and expanded to have more seating. Everything is baked fresh at the cafe including their own gluten-free bread.
2. Browse Main St and its Eclectic Mix of Shops
You’ll find clothing, home decor, local artisans, an independently owned bookstore and more.
3.Stock up at the Cheese Gallery
What makes the wine you will be drinking as you and your friends chill by a fire and catch-up later taste so much better? Cheese!
4. Go for a Hike
If you want to stay in town for a leisurely walk, pop up to Clarksburg for a walk at Clendenan Dam or follow the Georgian Trail along the Beaver River. Depending on the season, you may even see the salmon run. If you are feeling more adventurous, Loree Forest is only a ten minute drive away with some easy hiking trails that lead you to the top of Georgian Peaks with incredible views of Georgian Bay.
5. Gallery Hop in Clarksburg
Fondly called “Artsburg” this little village is the art centre of the region. And while you’re there grab some honey at the Beaver Valley Gold Honey House.
6. Enjoy Tastings at the Thornbury Village Cider House and Brewery
When in apple country…
Thornbury Cidery has some delicious apple ciders, but if that’s not your thing their craft beers are delicious, too. Win points with the partners you left at home (probably with the kids) and pick them up a six pack.
7. Visit a Winery
Yes we have grapes, too. The tasting room at Georgian Hills Vineyard is open all year. If you are feeling adventurous you can book a snowshoe tour through the vineyard that includes a trip to the tasting room at Georgian Hills and Thornbury Cidery.
8. Feast at One of Thornbury’s Restaurants.
For the size of the town, Thornbury has a number of great restaurants including renowned Toronto Chef Mark McEwan’s restaurant - Fabbrica. If you are looking for a local favourite, Bruce Wine Bar, The Dam Pub or The Mill Cafe are all delicious as well. Weekends are busy so book a reservation in advance.
9. Visit the Beach
Yes, the beach. Bundle up and take a quick walk down to the beach and Thornbury pier to see the many moods of Georgian Bay. In the late fall and winter it gets dark and moody and can be quite the sight to see.
10. Grab a Thorn”berry” Pie
You can’t leave Thornbury without visiting Goldsmith’s Orchard Market and picking up their famous Thornberry pie. The berries are from Goldsmith’s farm and the pie has a delicious crumble topping. Picking up a pie and a box of pressed apple cider will also help win points back home.
And if you are here, make sure you say hi! We love seeing friends and making new ones in town.
